Let’s get Hygge

12 February 2020

Our top tips for making the most of the winter months.

Winter can feel a little endless. The cold mornings, dark evenings and seemingly constant rain can make us all long for warm summer days. But, for now, at least, winter is here to stay. So we’ve embraced Hygge, the Scandinavian answer to making winter the cosiest season, with five tips on making the most of the colder months.

Grand Designs House
Gathering with friends at home is a great way to celebrate togetherness and escape the cold weather.

Staying in is the new going out

Forget shivering in the cold waiting for a taxi...staying in and spending time at home is a great way to make the most of the winter months.

Lighting candles and softening your space with comfortable furnishings will make your home feel even more inviting. Try laying a Celtic Sheepskin rug over our wooden Crib Bench to create a cosy place to gather.

So, invite your friends and family over for a home cooked meal and a glass of wine and celebrate togetherness.

Hanter Wall Light
Update your space with cosy textures to create a winter sanctuary.
Arbor Armchair
Our upholstered Arbor Armchair provides a comfy place to relax on winter evenings and invites you to take a moment for yourself.

Create a winter sanctuary

Ensuring your home is a sanctuary of comfort and calm, especially the rooms where you spend most of your time, like the living room and bedroom, is a fail-safe way to make winter a more enjoyable time of year.

From choosing the right colour palette to finding the cosiest soft furnishings and light fittings, our winter bedroom styling blog is full of tips on creating a winter sanctuary in your home.

Woods
Spending time outdoors and getting your daily quota of fresh air is a great way to boost your mood.

Spend Time Outside

Tempting as it may be to hibernate all winter long, getting outside is a great way to lift your mood and boost your vitamin D levels.

Why not gather a few friends and head out on a crisp sunny day for a long walk or hike. Be sure to pack a flask of piping hot tea to keep you warm and, when you get home, kick back on our comfy Arbor Sofa to ease your tired muscles.

Scots Lighting Range
Our Scots Lighting Range calls back to the woodland floor and provides a calm, warming glow.

Use clever lighting

Well considered, welcoming lighting is key to bringing some Hygge into your home. Choose bulbs with a warm, ambient glow and light fittings made from natural materials like our wooden Scots Pendant to achieve a cosy atmosphere.

Our dimmable light fittings are a great option for the winter as they’re bright enough to fill a room with light for daily tasks, yet can be easily muted to suit a more relaxed evening setting.

Create an indoor jungle

Biophilic design has proven to be an interior trend that's here to stay. There are countless benefits to bringing houseplants into your home - oxygenating the air and adding a pop of fresh colour to name but a few. Our Green Range features innovative indoor ceiling, wall and floor standing wooden planters that suit every space and are guaranteed to summon nature inside.

"A celebration of sustainable, biophilic design and traditional craftsmanship, The Green Range is born from the nature that inspires it"

– Founder, Tom Raffield.
