Case Study: Housel Bay

11 March 2020

Housel Bay Hotel located on the Lizard Point in Cornwall, UK, recently incorporated our Cage Lighting designs into their newly refurbished Fallowfields Restaurant. We caught up with their team to find out more about how they created this coastal-inspired space.

TR: You recently re-designed your Fallowfields Restaurant, tell us about the design inspiration behind the project.

HB: Our main design inspiration for the renovation of our signature restaurant, Fallowfields, is the beautiful and wild location of our Hotel. We are lucky to be positioned in the breathtaking Lizard Peninsula, right up on a cliff above Housel Bay. This is the most southerly tip of British mainland, with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic ocean.

Our Head Chef, Joseph Fallowfield, also takes inspiration from the Lizard Peninsula, sourcing local ingredients, and what is available in the season. We wanted to complement his contemporary style of cooking, whilst also reflecting our beautiful surroundings.

TR: Why did you decide to use Tom Raffield lighting in your scheme?

HB: We have long been fans of Tom’s designs and have several pieces in our own home including a bespoke Giant Flock Chandelier.

We were keen for guests to experience the joy of seeing these wooden steam bent masterpieces. We particularly wanted to use local artists and designers to create something special.

Tom Raffield also takes his inspiration from nature, which reflects our ethos: escaping to the Lizard Peninsula to re-connect with nature. We also love the values behind Tom Raffield’s products, being sustainable and ethically sourced.

Cage Pendant's Shadows
The Cage Pendant Light produces elegant shadows that transform the feel of a room.

TR: The Cage Pendant Lights and Cage Floor Lights look really effective in the space, what made you choose these designs in particular?

HB: We hadn’t seen the Cage Lighting Range used in other spaces, but they perfectly complemented the wooden slatted features in our restaurant. Guests looking up would be blown away by the intricacy of the design. They reminded us a little of lobster pots, which again fitted well with our location. At night they cast the most magical shadows. The wall lights and floor lights bring the ‘look’ together perfectly.
