Evening Rituals: How to Use Lighting to Wind Down
A cosy warm glow in the corner of a room, light that diffuses gently rather than harshly, and natural materials that soften your surroundings can all help create a feeling of comfort and calm. It’s not about completely altering your home, but about making small changes that help it feel inviting and put you at ease. Read on as we share tips on choosing lighting that can enable you to have a slow and restful evening.
Switch from bright lights to a warm, soft glow
Evening light encourages you to slowly wind down. Just as the sun gradually changes from bright white to the honeyed yellow tones of golden hour, allow your home's lighting to reflect this natural shift.
The key is to make a gentle transition rather than a sudden change. During the hour or two after dinner, start dimming the bright lights you might have used for cooking or working. First, lower the overhead lights, then add in warmer, more focused lighting, consider a table lamp or a floor lamp casting a soft upward glow. Remember, even small adjustments show your nervous system that it's time to wind down for the day.

Our handcrafted wooden lights are particularly well-suited to this. The natural grain of steam-bent oak or ash softens and diffuses light beautifully, casting patterns that feel organic and calm rather than clinical, the kind of light that invites you to sit down and relax. Choose the Artus Table Light for a delicate light which casts a mesmerising pattern of shadows from its dowel cage, or for something elegant and understated, look to our sculptural Skipper Small - Stem Floor Light, which creates a unique display of light and shadow, while seamlessly complementing any interior scheme.

Overhead lighting and ceiling lights illuminate an entire room, which can feel a little distracting in the evening, as there is nowhere for the eye to rest easily.
Choose delicate pools of light, which, by contrast, create intimacy. A well-placed floor lamp beside an armchair, a low-hanging pendant over a side table or a wall light that filters light gently upward, these make the room feel cosy, creating the ideal spot to curl up and relax with your favourite book.
The placement of your lights matters as much as the lights themselves. Consider lighting from below eye level where possible in the evenings. Lights placed at a lower level create a softer, more restful feel than overhead lighting, which mimics the brightness of the midday sun and can make you feel more alert and energised.
With its softly diffused downlight, the Keel Wall Light introduces a sense of quiet calm to bedrooms, hallways and living spaces. Its gentle illumination creates a calm feel without overwhelming a room, making it ideal for slower moments at home.
The Stem Table Light casts a warm, downward glow that brings softness and character to interiors. Crafted from wood and defined by its minimalist silhouette, it creates inviting pockets of light on sideboards, shelves and bedside tables alike. Both practical and sculptural, it offers an effortless balance of function and considered design.

Colour Temperature & Dimmers
In the evening, the quality of light matters just as much as its brightness. Colour temperature, measured in Kelvins (K), determines whether a light feels cool and energising or warm and restful. While daylight sits around 5,000K, lower temperatures create a softer, more calming feel. At 2,200K, our exposed filament bulbs create a rich amber glow that brings warmth to any space.
The finish of the bulb is also key. Exposed filament bulbs add character and visual warmth, while frosted designs diffuse light more gently, creating a softer, warm white and more ambient feel with reduced glare.
Paired with a dimmer switch, the right bulb allows you to gradually lower light levels throughout the evening, helping your home switch naturally from day to night. It's a simple detail that can have a surprisingly transformative effect on how a space feels.
