Lighting
Are Tom Raffield lights compatible with dimmer switches?
All Tom Raffield pendant lights can be dimmed providing you use a dimmable light bulb and a compatible dimmer switch i.e. LED dimmable light bulbs require a compatible LED dimmable switch. Please consult your electrician for further advice. Our floor and table lights, and some of our wall lights, which have an inbuilt switch, cannot be dimmed.
Are Tom Raffield lights suitable for outdoor or bathroom use?
Our lights are not currently suitable for use outdoors or in wet areas such as bathrooms.
Are Tom Raffield lights suitable for use outside of Europe?
Are Tom Raffield lights suitable for use in the EU?
The electrical components in all of our lights are CE certified. All of our table and floor lights come fitted with a UK plug. All of our wall lights are suitable for use in the EU and either come with a UK plug or can be connected straight to the mains supply by a qualified electrician. An electrician will also be able to swap a UK plug for a suitable one for the country you're in.
Are Tom Raffield lights suitable for use in the US and other countries where the mains supply is between 110-130 volts?
All Tom Raffield pendant lights (apart from our Cluster Lighting Range, the Kern Pendant, Kern Pendant Large, Kern Pendant Giant, and Giant Flock Chandelier) are suitable for use in the US and other countries on 110-130v mains supply - all orders delivered to the US come with an E26 ceiling kit compatible with any E26 screw cap bulb. Please note that the E26 ceiling kits we provide are not UL rated. Our table lights, wall lights and floor lights are not currently suitable for use in the US and other countries on 110-130v mains due to the inbuilt wiring. Transformers can be used but are not available directly through Tom Raffield.
Can I adjust the drop of my ceiling light?
Most of our pendant lights are supplied with a 2m ceiling kit and flex (apart from the Kern Pendant, Kern Pendant Large, Kern Pendant Giant, Cluster Lighting Range and Giant Flock Chandelier). These can shortened by either concealing the flex in the void of the ceiling rose, or by cutting the flex at the ceiling rose end. This must always be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Can I adjust the drop of my Kern Pendant?
The Kern Pendant comes pre-wired with a 2 meter drop. It is possible to make this longer by rewiring it with your own length flex and lamp/bulb holders. You must consult a qualified electrician for further advice on this. Equally, it is possible to shorten the drop of the Kern - an electrician will be able to shorten the flex by concealing this is the ceiling rope and/or cutting it to the adjusted length.
Does the finish of wood affect the amount of light emitted from my light?
Ash, oak and walnut woods all emit a different quantity of light - read our guide to finding the perfect light for your space.
How do I care for my Tom Raffield light?
Read our product care guide.
How do I install my wall light?
Stem, Wheal and Hanter Wall Lights are supplied with a plug-in-and-go inline switch and UK plug. They can be hard-wired into the mains electricity using the connection box provided, concealing the flex in the void behind the wooden back plate supplied.
Urchin, Scots and Eddy Wall Lights are supplied with a bulb holder that screws directly into the wall and is hardwired into the mains electricity.
The Cape Wall Light is supplied with an angled B22 bulb holder (bayonet fitting) fixed to a wooden back plate. This can be hardwired directly into the mains electricity.
How does the colour of wood change over time?
The colour of wood gradually develops over time - this is part of the beauty of natural materials. Read our guide to choosing your wood type to find out more.
I have a high ceiling - are longer ceiling kits and flex available?
All of our ceiling lights (apart from the Cluster Lighting Range, Kern Pendant, Kern Pendant Large, Kern Pendant Giant and Giant Flock Chandelier) are available with a 4m ceiling kit and flex if required. Get in touch with sales@tomraffield.com to find out more.
I have very low ceilings - is it possible to mount my pendant light onto the ceiling?
Most of our pendant lights can be hung with little or no flex showing between the ceiling rose and bulb holder, allowing you to mount your lights directly onto the ceiling. This can be done by cutting the flex at the ceiling rose end (see adjusting my ceiling kit) but it is always recommended a qualified electrician do this for you.
