Lookbook: the Workshop

6 June 2019

Take a behind-the-scenes peek into our Cornish lighting and furniture workshops.

Our latest lookbook takes a peek inside the hive of activity that is the Tom Raffield workshop.

Set in the midst of our seven-acre Cornish woodland, our lighting and furniture workshops are a hub of creativity and craftsmanship. Underpinning our skilled team's strong work ethic is a shared passion for steam bending and handcrafted, sustainable design. The Tom Raffield ethos is crucial to ensuring that everything runs smoothly, and standards remain high.

Steam bent wooden components await assembly prior to becoming Quill and Arame Pendants from our Modum Range.

Graceful, curved petals of our Quill 550 Pendant and Quill 325 Pendant reflect shapes found in the natural world.
The upholstered section of our Arbor Armchair is lifted onto its solid oak under-structure. Discover our new range of upholstery colours here.
The struts of our Amble Hanging Seat are clamped to their frame after being steam bent. This ensures the struts maintain their curved shape during the drying process.
Pieces of solid oak are placed in our steaming chamber until they are ready to bend. Steam bending is the bread and butter of our business and informs the aesthetic of every creation we make.
Thin strips of wood, destined to make up the intricate curves of our No.1 Pendant, are bent round a tubular metal cylinder as the emerge from the steamer.
The long strips of thin oak, ash or walnut descend, having been carefully bent fresh from our steamer, then dried.
The infinite bends of our No.1 Pendant are assembled by a member of our lighting team. This process takes hours to complete, while only the most skilled members of our team can execute it.
A member of our workshop team assembles one of our Morvah Hanging Wall Planters, from our Green Range.
The arc of our Hanter Table Light is fitted to its base by one of our expert lighting team.
The petals of our Arame Wall Light are assembled. Geometric patterns that reflect those found in nature, emerge.
