Next in our Ten with Tom series, we delve behind the scenes of Cornish brand Bobbi Beck, who are on a mission to produce beautiful sustainable wallpapers.

TR: Tell us about Bobbi Beck and how the business started?

BB: Bobbi Beck was founded in 2021 with an ambition to design and produce beautiful wallpapers with a limited impact on the planet. It was started by myself (James Mellan-Matulewicz) and two co-founders after several years in the industry. We thought we could use our skills and experiences to bring something new to the market and so Bobbi Beck was launched.

TR: Why, and how, is sustainability so important to you and the team at Bobbi Beck?

BB: Sustainability is important to everyone here. When launching Bobbi Beck, we decided to make it a key part of what we do and it's critical to how we run our business and make our products. If we're making things for people's homes, we want to make sure we're not damaging the planet in the process. As a made-to-order brand, we produce next-to-no waste and our paper is sourced from certified sustainable forests, whilst the majority of designs are also PVC-free. The inks that we print with are  non-toxic and the cartridges are recycled after use.

TR: Where do you find creative inspiration?

BB: All over the place, really. We don't have a specific house style, which means we have the flexibility to create designs that are trending and listen to requests from our customers. Because our products are made to order, we have the luxury of experimenting with designs because the risk is low. This means we can often offer things that are more niche or interesting for customers, which can be really fun from a design perspective.

TR: What has been your proudest design moment?

BB: Seeing customer photos of our wallpaper in situ. We love seeing the creative ways customers can interpret the same design into entirely different themes.

TR: What's your favourite part of your job?

BB: It has to be developing new products. As we're a small team, we all wear lots of hats within the business, but personally, I cover all aspects of design. Getting into the flow and working on new products is always the most fun thing to be doing for me.

A person with neatly manicured hands is sketching detailed floral designs on white paper using a black pen. Several sheets with botanical drawings are spread out on a clean white desk. Colored pencils and black markers are organized in a floral-patterned cup and a glass jar nearby, along with a few colored pens lying on the surface. The environment feels creative, calm, and focused, suggesting an artistic workspace. No visible text in the image.

TR: We love hearing about other people's interior style. What makes your house a home?

BB: When designing interiors I like to pay respect to the context of the building. For example, my home is a 200-year-old Cornish cottage and so while I like to try and modernise it, I attempt to do so in a way that still keeps the charm and character of what a Cornish cottage should be, which is cosy, rural and with a hint of coastal style.

TR: What's your favourite place to visit in Cornwall?

BB: I love spending time in Rock. It's easy to get to from where I live and is full of great bars and restaurants. Afternoon tea at St Enedoc hotel is a great way to pass some time on a Sunday afternoon.

The setting appears calm and focused, suggesting careful preparation or crafting in a workspace. No visible text in the image.

TR: What is your favourite Tom Raffield design? And why?

BB: My favourite is the Loer Pendant. While I spend much of my time designing bright and bold wallpapers, I personally like a minimalist aesthetic and enjoy the clean and simple silhouette of the Loer Pendant.

TR: What is next for Bobbi Beck?

BB: More designs! We're always working on new collections and we're currently focused on more subtle designs that focus more on textural elements than patterns, as we don't have many of those but get asked for them regularly.
