Behind the Design: Luna Chandelier
Inspiration
A striking multi-light centrepiece for the home, the oak Luna Chandelier takes inspiration from the lunar constellations seen on the Cornish coastline.
Composed of six translucent glass spheres that bring weightless illumination to any space they reach. Hanging alongside fifteen carefully curated, double-layered, twisted wooden wings, they soar together to create a dynamic visual display, reflecting the twinkling stars we see across the night's sky.
Prototyping and Making
Each piece of wood is hand-curved to provide an organic shape that emits a dazzling array of light and shadow, dancing between the curves of the twisted shapes. Creating an ornate centrepiece, the wooden light fitting is crafted to hang beautifully above a dining table, coffee table or in an entranceway, offering a welcoming radiance.
Tom and his seasoned design team work through multiple prototypes, adjusting the design and re-working elements until it's perfect. Each wooden twist is repositioned by hand, until it's set just right to emit the required ambience.
Crafting each perfectly formed piece entails the wood being bent around a jig and baked, to ensure it can hold its shape. To create the desired curve, every component has a double layer of wood which is bent into the form as one piece and then pulled apart.
Each component is precisely positioned with set measurements from the top plate, to sit well with the two different sizes of glass sphere from all perspectives; it's this attention to detail which gives the Luna Chandelier its beautiful flowy effect.
Finishing Touches
Once complete, each design is sprayed in our signature matt finish, eco-friendly, water-based varnish which provides a natural finish. Final quality control checks then take place before the chandelier is carefully packaged in our custom, plastic-free, recyclable packaging and sent on its way to light up someone's home.
In Situ
Both a functional work of art and a timeless design, the Luna Chandelier reflects Tom Raffield's signature style — crafted to stand the test of time, whether it graces a hallway, an open living space or a showstopping kitchen.
The Luna Chandelier is available as either a flush fitting or suspended fixture.
