What's the Best Lighting Temperature for a Cosy Home?

29 October 2026

Colour temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), describes how warm or cool a bulb's light looks: the lower the number, the warmer and more golden the glow. Tom Raffield shares which bulbs to choose for each room, featuring our Bloom, Hanter, Artus and Skipper lights.

Lighting temperature can have a surprising impact on your surroundings, whether the room simply feels a little 'off' or not quite bright enough. Putting a little extra consideration into your various bulbs and light fittings can be the difference between a cosy home this autumn/winter, and a space that feels like it's been left out in the cold.

Here, our Founder and Creative Director, Tom Raffield, shares his top tips for choosing the best bulbs for your home.

Warm white: living rooms and bedrooms

For ultimate cosymaxxing as the cooler months arrive, warm white bulbs at 2000K - 2700K will offer a golden-yellow glow reminiscent of candlelight.

A taut arc of steam bent timber clings to a solitary filament bulb. Refreshing in its simplicity, surprising in its design, our Hanter Lighting Range turns heads.

As the days get shorter, it's time to rethink the purpose of lighting in our homes. To create that warm, cosy atmosphere that we crave at this time of year, choose 2000K - 2700K bulbs; you'll get a golden-yellow glow that's reminiscent of candlelight or incandescent bulbs, that's perfect for living rooms or bedrooms.

Every bulb we sell sits in this warm range. Filament bulbs such as the Tala Elva glow at 2200K, while coated bulbs such as the Tala Porcelain III sit at 2700K.

Neutral white: kitchens and hallways

As much as we'd like to hibernate during the cooler months, there's still a need for daily activity and lighting for darker days and late afternoons. In open spaces like kitchens, dining areas and hallways, choose a neutral or warm white bulb at 3000K - 3500K.

For spaces that call for functional lighting, 3000K - 3500K bulbs offer a beautifully balanced light. In hallways, it creates a soft, welcoming transition between rooms, while in kitchens it provides the clarity needed for everyday tasks, still maintaining a warm, inviting feel. When dispersed through a design like our Skipper pendant, the softly looping design complements the gentle warmth of the light, creating an understated flow that feels both inviting and considered.

Cool white: offices and workspaces

In spaces such as offices, garages and workspaces, a cool white bulb offers the bright, clean light that's required. Tom says: "Functional spaces require lighting that matches up. Look for 4000K - 4500K bulbs, which offer a cool, neutral white light that doesn't create a yellow cast for spaces, and choose designs that fill the space with light, such as exposed bulbs."

Daylight: task and security lighting

For some areas of the home, only daylight will do. In spaces where detailed tasks are completed, outdoor security lights or reading areas, opt for 5000K - 6500K bulbs.

Tom suggests: "Lighting temperature in autumn/winter isn't just about creating warmth and atmosphere; cooler light can also play an important role in spaces where clarity and visibility are key. For task or security lighting, 5000K - 6500K bulbs deliver a crisp, daylight-mimicking quality of light with a subtle blue undertone. Used selectively, this can bring greater definition to a space and provide the clarity needed for practical tasks, particularly in areas where visibility is important."
