Styling and Inspiration: Wood Drenching

16 April 2026

Wood drenching brings warmth and natural texture to every corner of a room. Read our take on one of interior design's most considered trends...

Decorating your home brings a real sense of joy; it's an opportunity to let your personality shine, whether that's through colour choices, artwork, or design decisions that work perfectly for your lifestyle.

In recent years, colour drenching — covering each wall and the ceiling in the same shade — has become a popular way to create an impact, as well as making smaller spaces feel bigger and more cohesive.

The art of drenching has moved beyond just colour, as we begin to experiment with different materials and patterns to bring rooms to life. For a more minimalist approach to the trend, why not consider wood drenching. Using the natural material offers slight nuances in tone and texture, making it less overwhelming to those who prefer a pared back look.

Create a statement with the Luna Chandelier, a striking multi-light centrepiece featuring double-layered, twisted wooden wings that appear to float, showcasing the delicate versatility of wood. The Kanna Drum Pendant is the perfect choice for the minimalist, while still adding texture and warmth through its organic wood grain. This design is the ultimate layering piece to complement a wooden cladded wall.

The Power of Biophilic Design

It has long been proven that biophilic design within homes is beneficial for psychological wellbeing. Nature can reduce stress levels and enhance mood, so it makes sense to incorporate natural materials into your home wherever possible.

Here at Tom Raffield, nature is intrinsically connected to everything we create; each design inspired by Tom's walks across the Cornish coast. From looping bends representing petals, to shell-inspired shapes and timber perfectly steam-bent to reflect the curve of a wave, biophilic design is at the heart of our work.

Add texture to your wood drenching with accessories and functional décor in the same material, a beautifully crafted wood light feature set against a timber kitchen in its natural tone or a wall light set against wooden panelling.

Incorporate other natural materials into the space, as well as plenty of greenery, to fully immerse yourself in biophilic design.

The Neap Wall Light's elegant form carves a perfectly balanced path of light, illuminating both above and below while casting delicate shadows across its wooden backdrop.

While the No.1 Pendant beautifully complements the surrounding architecture, adding softness against the lines of timber and inviting the eye toward the view beyond.

Experiment with Tones

The beauty of wood drenching means you don't necessarily need to stick with one colour or design; in fact, the very nature of wood with its knots and grains, allows for interesting differences which create more of a 'lived in' look.

If you're unsure of how to combine different wood types, here are some top tips from our Creative Director and Founder, Tom:

"Continuity is key. Rather than using different wood tones for every item within a room, select a dominant shade for the expansive areas of the space — floors and big pieces of furniture — and then introduce other tones with smaller accessories or lighting designs.

An ornate marriage of balance and light, the Verso Wall Light in Ash is an asymmetrical wooden work of art that welcomes a fresh perspective.

Think about what you want from the room. For inviting bedrooms and cosy corners opt for walnut and oak. They work wonderfully together and have enhanced warmer tones when illuminated with a glowing pendant light. In more open spaces, such as a hallways, cooler ash toned wood creates a fresh, inviting atmosphere."

Tom Raffield Skipper Portable Table Light
The Skipper Portable Table Light is crafted from twelve individual, sustainably sourced ash, oak, or walnut wood petals and designed to emit golden light upward and outward. Here, the Skipper in walnut pairs beautifully with a small oak side table.

"Having different light sources throughout the day can also completely change the tone of wood and the overall feel of a room. From early morning natural light to a daytime table lamp or an evening pendant glow, watch your wood-drenched room subtly change throughout the day."
