The Art of Curves in the Home

29 August 2025

Curves may be at the top of every interior designer’s wishlist, but at Tom Raffield, we see them as far more than a passing style. For us, they’re a design statement that seamlessly adds movement, softness, and a timeless style to any corner of the home.
The Art of Curves in the Home

In our Cornish workshop, each curve is handcrafted through the traditional art of steam bending, a process that allows wood to flow into organic forms inspired by nature itself. These fluid shapes bring a softness to interiors, breaking away from the straight lines and hard edges that we often see in them.

Whether it’s an intricate statement lighting design placed elegantly over a dining table, a wall light that swoops and twists, or a small but mighty table lamp that bounces lights across the room, the combination of curves and lighting has the power to transform the way a room feels completely.

Why Curves Work in Interiors

Curves create a visual flow that makes spaces feel more open and inviting. In living rooms, soft lines can make a space feel more relaxed, while in bedrooms, they add a cocooning comfort, and in dining areas, they encourage connection and conversation. Curves bring balance to any setting and help to soften and elevate every part of the home.

The magic behind our curves starts with sustainably sourced hardwoods such as oak, ash, and walnut. We’ve carefully chosen these materials for their strength, flexibility, and beauty. Using steam bending, our makers coax the timber into smooth curves and sweeping twists, all without harmful glues and with minimal waste. This low-energy, hands-on process ensures no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Tom’s Advice on Introducing Curves into Your Home:

“For anyone looking to introduce stylish curves into their home, a statement light is the ideal starting point. A steam-bent design, in particular, brings sculptural beauty that ensures your lighting remains a striking focal point from day to night. As evening falls, the piece comes alive as it casts beautiful shadows that dance across the room. More than just illumination, a steam-bent light is a work of art, offering a unique way to bring curves into your interior scheme.”

More Than a Trend

More and more people are embracing organic design, choosing spaces that feel natural and calming. Curves are timeless - they bring a sense of craft, connection, and comfort to a room.

For us, every curve has a story to tell, from the sustainable materials we use to the skill of the makers, to the belief that a home should echo the beauty and rhythm of the natural world.
