Styling and Inspiration: Small Bedroom Ideas
Small bedrooms, whether your own, a guest room or even a part-time office, have a reputation of being difficult to style. Too many items can make it feel cluttered and chaotic while a lack of any styling can feel sparce and less of a retreat.
We’re big believers in the power of design here at Tom Raffield; the smallest of changes can have a huge impact to how a room looks, and importantly, how it feels.
Introduce Natural Materials
In the bedroom, we generally want to feel calm, it’s our space to unwind after a long day and where we wake up to start afresh. Incorporating natural materials, such as timber, and linen is a great way to create an idyllic space, adding a touch of calming luxury throughout.
Wall lights are useful to save space while adding a design feature to your small bedroom. Our Neap and Hanter wall lights are generally space-savers, without compromising on style.
Pair these with soft linen bedding and rattan furniture to create an inviting space which feels instantly calming. A nature inspired colour palette will lend itself to the materials in the room while minimal accessories will help keep the bedroom clutter-free.
Creating Design Features
The great thing about small bedrooms is that you can make a design feature out of your chosen pieces, and it will essentially do the hard work of styling your room for you.
If you’re short on wall space due to storage, consider a focus feature such as tall floor lamp or a table lamp which could sit on a bedside table, desk or chest of drawers. The Raya table light is beautifully simple addition; inspired by the elliptical orbits of the planets and moons, it sits well within a bedroom, bringing weightless illumination through its translucent glass and sustainable, steam bent ash wood and brushed metallic brass combination.
The Loer Floor Light is relatively space-saving, with the beautiful arched design creating a sense of streamlined peace, while the Artus Small Stem Floor Light, handcrafted from sustainably sourced solid oak is the perfect statement piece, offering a balance between form and function; much needed in smaller rooms.
Consider Zones
Despite having a smaller space, there’s no reason you can’t experiment with creating different zones within a small bedroom – especially if it’s multi-purpose. Use accessories such as rugs and furniture to separate different corners of the room.
The area around the bed should feel warm, inviting and relaxing – think, dim lighting and a warm, cosy atmosphere.
Furniture is a great way to ensure the bedroom is clutter free and to keep items stored away. Consider dual-purpose furniture such beds with built in storage or desks with drawers and incorporate wall-shelving to help keep floor space clear.
Lighting plays a huge role in helping to create zones – factor in natural light, including where and when it best hits the room, and then incorporate lighting in the areas you need it most. Whether that’s a statement overhead pendant light, or a beautiful table light to create a calming ambience.
