National Tree Week
National Tree Week is the UK's largest annual tree celebration, marking the start of the winter tree planting season. This week (27th Nov - 5th Dec) people are planting trees around the country and laying down roots for a more tree-filled future, to tackle climate change and protect our precious wildlife habitats.
"Trees do so much for us every day. They give us oxygen, store carbon, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, support wildlife and are a key solution to climate change. They also make our communities more beautiful and improve our well-being".
- Tree Council.
Trees need our help
Existing tree planting targets will not help us plant the millions of extra trees needed to help reduce UK carbon emissions and tackle climate change. We collectively need to plant around 30,000 hectares of trees every year for the next thirty years throughout the UK – which is approximately the size of the Isle of Wight (38,000 ha) in trees every year.
To make this challenge harder, our trees are threatened by many diseases. For example, ash die back is expected to wipe out millions of ash trees over the coming decade.
To meet these challenges, we all need to get involved. Some of the Tom Raffield team volunteered at a local tree planting activity this week organised by Tevi held at Enys Gardens as part of the Tree Council’s National Tree Week. The weather held and we were excited to get our hands dirty and share the experience of planting trees together. A variety of UK grown species were planted to build cover in several different spaces and help the garden face it's challenges in managing the impact of tree disease and deterioration.
This National Tree Week join the Tom Raffield team in becoming tree champions and help us ensure a greener future.
