How to: Light Your Kitchen
The kitchen is easily one of the most used spaces within the home, from family breakfasts and celebratory lunches to shared bottles of wine and coffee catchups, the kitchen plays host to it all. It's where arts and crafts unfold, date nights are enjoyed, Zoom calls are taken, and so much more. The kitchen sees every stage of the day.
Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes — from open-plan spaces which seamlessly flow into dining or living areas, to designs centered around expansive, multi-purpose islands, or small, perfectly formed kitchens where everything has its place.
No matter the size or style of a kitchen, every design naturally forms its own zones: a cooking area, a morning coffee spot, and a dining space where the family gathers. Each of these zones also has its own functional needs, from clutter-free worktops for meal prep to easy-access mugs for hot drinks, and plenty of natural light when the space doubles as a home office.
Light is incredibly important when it comes to creating different zones in a kitchen — and in allowing it to be a multi-purpose space. Keep things bright and well-lit for a casual meal or opt for more of a dimmed glow for evening entertainment.
Successful kitchen lighting is all about using light to enhance the space and make it suited for the task at hand, creating just the right setting and ambience.
For early morning coffees
A soft glow of light is sometimes all you need if you're an early riser making your first coffee of the day. Adding a table light to your worktop or island (or moving it to wherever you need it — the beauty of a portable light) could do just the trick to help you set your intentions for the day.
Inspired by the elliptical orbits of the planets and the moon, the Loer Table Light is almost an indoor globe of sunshine, brightening up your morning if the sun isn't yet out. Combining translucent glass with sustainable steam-bent ash wood and brushed metallic brass, the Loer is a mixed-material wonder.
For a softer light, the Artus Table Light makes a subtle statement while radiating light through its birch dowel cage.
For cooking, cleaning and everything in between
Functional light doesn't have to be boring. Our new Linear Trio Lights are ideal for casting light across an area in the kitchen, whether that's over an island, a section of worktop or close to a dining set up.
Available in twelve different designs, make a pared back statement with the Voronoi II - Linear Trio Light. The classic oak is combined with a statement bulb which is designed to mimic the Fibonacci sequence found in nature, with its distinctive spiral LED filament in a mouth-blown glass surround.
For a bolder look, opt for the Skipper Small - Linear Trio Light Long instead, with its rectangular three-way fixture it's perfect for creating multiple suspensions above a table, kitchen island or bar counter.
Making a statement
There's plenty of opportunity to make a statement with kitchen lighting — simply choose a design that does all of the talking. When illuminated, its impact is only amplified, bringing the whole space to life.
Go bold with the No.1 Pendant. Precise yet untamed, imposing yet weightless, this intricate design creates just the right amount of impact. Suspend above a dining table or kitchen island, and consider pairing two for a striking sculptural display that draws attention whether switched on or off.
Alternatively, create wall art and add delicate interest to bare walls with the Arame Wall Light. Inspired by the organic shapes and movement that surround us, it casts ever-changing shadows and kaleidoscopic tessellations — a striking focal point for any kitchen and dining area that brings a subtle element of surprise. A reminder that kitchen lighting can be both beautiful and practical.
