Behind the Design: Bloom Pendant
Expert craftsmanship is at the very core of our products here at Tom Raffield. From initial sketches to hand-bent timber, there’s not a detail that is missed. Full of joyful curves, our Bloom Pendant is no different so we’ve caught up with Tom and our design team to hear all about it.
Inspiration
The local coast path here in Falmouth, Cornwall is framed by blooming wildflowers, their soft petals intertwining and forming graceful, flowing lines and organic curves along the way. Our Bloom Pendant takes joyful interpretation from nature’s beauty with its elegant loops creating soft, sweeping light.
Prototyping
Our expert team of crafters are always experimenting with new tools and techniques to create the most masterful designs, so prototyping is an incredibly important stage of the process.
The Bloom Pendant is created from 16 lengths of hand-carved, sustainably sourced wood, so naturally, a series of design and experimentation stages occur, ensuring our final products are masterfully created.
Inspired by his walks in nature and along the Cornish coast, Tom leads the initial design conception. Sketching ideas by hand, Tom then takes to his workshop, experimenting with wood and other mixed mediums to recreate the shapes he’s seen. No concept goes to waste, with each creation or design going on to inform another.
Tom then collaborates with our design team, Katie and Callum, transforming his initial, hand-made prototypes into CAD drawings and testing various techniques and processes before arriving at the final creation.
Once the trio are happy with their final, hand-made creations, the designs are re-created digitally to ensure every product is made with precise measurements to create structurally sound products. After a final stage of testing, Katie and Callum then go on to train the workshop team on how to craft the Bloom Pendant.
The finishing touches
To ensure our Bloom Pendants meet our Lifetime of Happiness... Guaranteed promise, each design is sprayed with a matt finish, protecting the wood. The eco-friendly, water-based varnish provides a natural finish prior to final quality control checks. The pendant is then carefully packaged up in custom, plastic free, recyclable packaging and sent on its way to light up someone’s home.
In Bloom
Each piece of wood is hand-curved to provide an organic shape that emits a wonderful array of light and shadow, dancing between the curves of the petal-like shapes. Creating an ornate centrepiece, the wooden lampshade is crafted to hang beautifully above a dining table, bed or in an entranceway, offering a welcoming radiance.
