Job Title Assistant Accountant - Maternity Cover (12 months)


Reporting to Financial Controller


Salary £19,574 FTE

Job Overview

To support the Financial Controller in the preparation of the management accounts and additional reporting requirements by ensuring the purchase ledger, sales ledger and bank are reconciled on a timely and accurate basis. To help implement suitable controls within the finance department and liaise with other teams to ensure smooth processing within the department. There is the option of a study package, to include a days study with salary on a pro rata basis. 


The role will have a good handover from the current Assistant Account.


Duties and responsibilities


  • Match, code and post all purchase ledger transactions, from stock purchases to expenses transactions
  • Process company credit card transactions ensuring accurate analysis of VAT on expenses
  • Process all staff expense claims, coding and checking VAT
  • Check sales ledger invoices, managing and reconciling retail customer accounts, such as, John Lewis and Heal’s
  • Deal with any sales ledger queries
  • Manage credit control for all major customers
  • Complete the bank reconciliation
  • Seek and make use of specialist financial reports
  • Present timely and accurate financial reports as required
  • Work in a proactive way to suggest areas for improvement for the growing company and finance department
  • Assist with any other ad hoc financial tasks as required
  • Complete the VAT return and EC sales list
  • Assist in the preparation of the management accounts in time, posting and preparing journals such as prepayments, fixed assets, accruals and payroll journal.



The successful candidate will


  • Be a CIMA / ACA / ACCA studier
  • Have experience in a similar role
  • Be a confident person with a professional but personable character
  • Have excellent numeracy, literacy and IT skills especially MS Excel
  • Be able to communicate clearly, concisely, verbally and in writing
  • Have the ability to work as part of a small but fast-growing team as well being able to work independently, manage time effectively and prioritise workload under pressure
  • Be hardworking, committed and interested in the challenge of working for an exciting young business going through rapid growth.
